As
I lean back with my headphones and pour over these recordings relentlessly,
I can't help but me moved by the remarkable intensity and passion
of these wonderful country artists. This collection samples 64 of
those that were fortunate enough to have caught the recording industry's
attention. My selection of material is relatively random, but primarily
focusing on the origins of early string band music, usually comprised
of at least a banjo and a fiddle.
A
broad variety of styles emerges from these recordings, from the
archaic, chordal drone of REAVES WHITE COUNTY RAMBLERS of
Arkansas, to the sophisticated and smooth sound of farmer DOC
ROBERTS from Kentucky, or the wonderful harmonies and songs
of the GEORGIA YELLOW HAMMERS.
The SKILLET
LICKERS of Georgia, are represented strongly here with some
classics and lesser known tunes and are an ever present joy to weary
ears and soul with their wonderful gait , style, and humour.
The mysterious
SCOTTDALE STRING BAND of Georgia has been reissued extremely
rarely and they play here a well known popular piece of the day,
Silver Bell and Green Mountain Poker
on the flip side. I assume the name was mistakenly named, however
as this is clearly Flop Eared Mule which EARL JOHNSON
also calls Green Mountain Polka.
Mr.
A.J. Green of GREEN'S STRING BAND of Kentucky provides weeping
music with his gloriously melancholy Glide Waltz,
while GRAYSON & WHITTER wail mournfully their love songs.
CHARLIE STRIPLING
of Alabama won so many contests with his broad deep tone and articulation
that he was paid on occasion to stay away from the contest to encourage
other fiddlers to attend! He fiddles several beautiful melodies,
some of his own composition.
FIDDLIN' BOB
LARKAN of Arkansas, played both unusual, perplexing tunes and
settings, often in Bb and his wild dynamics and infectious singing
are evidenced here in Women Wear No Clothes At All
and his version of the popular 1920's standard Ain't She
Sweet.
From Tennessee,
the blazing Jimmy McCarroll of the ROANE COUNTY RAMBLERS
provides an amazing reworking of the classic Lee Highway Blues
with his Home Town Blues. Also from Tennessee, HOMER
DAVENPORT & THE YOUNG BROTHERS are a relatively obscure group
and their Maybell Rag is typical of their exciting
and hard driving banjo heavy sound.
Needless to say,
there so much more to say about this music and all the musicians
who gracefully bared their souls for a brief moment in time. Fortunately,
the music is much more eloquent than I so please spin this disc
and be amused, inspired, and uplifted!
